Scanning Electron Microscopy

SEM provides a visual topography of pore geometry, pore distribution and flow paths within a core sample. This technique permits better understanding of clay type and origin, the resident micropore network of the sample as well as mineral content with EDS (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy) detection.

The produced images can be digitally analyzed to indicate the area percentage of available porosity, organic matter and minerals that are present in the core sample. Samples require minimal sample prep and with our desktop SEM system, results are quickly obtained.

In our labs we utilize the world’s fastest SEM, the Phenom Pro. This system provides up to 130,000x magnification, and is equipped with an EDS detection system.
